Since prehistoric times, the Valle Camonica, a splendid valley crossed entirely by the winding River Oglio, has always been a place of civilisation, of signs, of art, of natural wonders, but also a strategic territorial location, as was the case in the distant 16th century BCE, when a certain emperor Octavian Augustus, the first of Roman civilisation, decided to consolidate the northern borders of his empire by occupying this valley, so as to strategically and commercially control the transalpine communication routes.
