Surrounding the forum were a network of streets, lined with shops, temples, and public buildings. Beyond the urban core, a grid of roads extended like arteries, connecting the town to other parts of the empire.

The construction of Roman towns followed a well-defined blueprint. Initially, the military played a pivotal role in establishing these settlements. They were strategically positioned to control key trade routes, secure borders, and manage newly acquired territories. Towns often began as military encampments, fortified with walls and watchtowers, designed to withstand potential threats. Gradually, as stability and prosperity took root, these encampments evolved into thriving urban centers.

At the heart of Roman urban planning was the grid. Roman cities were often laid out on a gridiron pattern, a testament to their commitment to order and symmetry. The streets intersected at right angles, creating rectangular blocks or insulae. This layout made navigation straightforward and facilitated the efficient division of land.

Within this grid, two main thoroughfares crisscrossed the city: the so-called “cardo” and the “decumanus”. The cardo ran north-south, while the decumanus ran east-west. These main arteries served as vital conduits for transportation and commerce, and they often intersected at a central plaza known as the forum.

The forum was the civic, economic, and social heart of a Roman town. It served as a central marketplace, a place for public gatherings, and often housed important administrative buildings. Temples, basilicas, and government offices surrounded the forum, creating a sense of grandeur and civic pride. Beyond the necessities of life, Romans also valued entertainment and leisure. Many Roman towns boasted impressive theatres and amphitheatres, where residents could watch gladiator games, chariot races, and theatrical performances, fostering a sense of community and culture.
