A leap into the 13th - 16th centuries in the Duchy of Milan
This itinerary aims to rediscover still-visible remains of the development of the duchy during the period of domination by noble families such as the Visconti and Sforza. The Duchy of Milan was a powerful kingdom in northern Italy, which, thanks to the foresight of its rulers, including Gian Galeazzo Visconti and later Ludovico Sforza, was able to exploit the natural wealth of the territory, namely the abundance of water. Moreover, thanks to technological innovations of the times that used water for irrigation and transportation, the kingdom of Milan grew rich through trade, so much so that it imposed itself on the European political sphere. Immersed in the Lombardy countryside, this tour’s visitors will be able to discover curiosities and explore curious traces. Moreover, thanks to the flat terrain, this route covers 20 km without putting its adventurers to the test.
This itinerary takes place in the countryside outside of Milan, and a bike is needed.
You can rent a bike at Castelli Dell’Antico Ducato di Milano (at +39 347 7972898). Contact them for any information!
Otherwise, it is possible to reach the starting point by bike directly from Milan with a 50 min ride following the Navigli channel.
Some tour sections are not on cycle paths but on provincial roads. Although the streets have little traffic, caution is always recommended.
